Project Description
This Family Room is an addition (extended from the original side porch) on a period Folk Victorian Home, skillfully executed by Architectural Design Works, Inc., in Towson, MD. From the outside, one would never know it is not original to the existing structure until viewing the same house next door. The tall Italianate windows are an exact duplicate of the original east-facing parlor windows (not shown).
BRIEF:
Design an interior space where family, friends, and dogs can gather for television and entertaining:
CONSTRUCTION:
- Repaint existing walls and ceiling
The space did not require any major construction as the recent wallboard and flooring was in excellent condition. The north fireplace wall contains a beautifully painted mantel with classical detailing, and local granite (a green choice) river stones pulled from the Patapsco River. A pair of 102″ leather sofas ground the room and offer ample seating comfort. An existing farm table, lowered to a little higher than the coffee table height holds books, accessories, and easy casual serving for cuisine.
The media center is on the opposite wall, exactly where it should be. The color palette is creamy white on the ceiling blending into a warm taupe and is the perfect backdrop to the coloring in the furnishings and oriental rug. The two fireplace wall windows left undressed except for shutters, allow controlled light, air, and changing views of the lush landscape. This family room is the second most used room in the home for the family, and when entertaining large groups. The owners are dog lovers and Otto always knows how to pose for the camera! Finally, the neoclassic style accessories, vintage dialing telephone (it works!), and dog-friendly accessories complete this creative design scheme.
