A professional couple who purchased this historic home, known as Rock Hill, asked me to begin by providing solutions for the first floor dining room and parlor. I was successful in taking the couple’s existing antiques and other furnishings, interpreting their desire to maintain the period feeling of their home, and the sometimes-opposing wishes of the wife and husband. The husband prefers straight lines, angles, and clean spaces. The wife is a true classicist, and likes soft color and subtle pattern, but did not want a fussy, “Old Victorian look.” She wanted “a fresh and updated” version. A watercolor palette, custom-stenciled hardwood floors, and updated fabrics influenced everything during our collaboration. The result is elegant and formal, yet usable.
